Volcanic eruptions and which affected the European airspace

Overview of the last volcanic eruption and SO2 emission which affected the European airspace during the last six months.

In this animation, the volcanic SO2 is retrieved by TROPOMI sensor from the 1st of February to the 30th of June 2021.

The top images show the SO2 columns (expressed in Dobson Unit) with a focus on Europe, Africa and America. In the bottom panel, time-series illustrate the SO2 mass loading (in kilotons) related to 4 sources of volcanic SO2 emissions (in orange for volcanoes in South America and Carabean region with La Soufrière Saint-Vincent, in green for Nyiragongo in the Kivu region of the DRC, in blue for Fagradalsfjall volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula, and in red for the paroxysms of Etna in Sicily).
